On 27 November 2019, the Latrobe Valley Mine Rehabilitation Commissioner, Professor Rae Mackay, hosted a discussion on the latest rehabilitation planning studies completed to date for the three Latrobe Valley brown coal mines.
More than 90 people attended the forum held at the Italian Australian Club in Morwell.
Professor Mackay provided a presentation on the key milestones of mine rehabilitation planning to date since the 2014 Hazelwood Mine Fire Inquiry.
The event also featured a presentation from Acting Director Coal Resources Victoria Anthony Feigl who provided an update on the Latrobe Valley Regional Rehabilitation Strategy (LVRRS) ‘Overview’. The ‘Overview’ draws on the findings of the technical studies and the views of stakeholders consulted over the past three years to date. It is currently open to community feedback at: engage.vic.gov.au/latrobe-valley-regional-rehabilitation-strategy. Submissions close on 17 January 2020.
Jon Missen from AGL Loy Yang, Antonia Scrase from EnergyAustralia Yallourn, and James Faithful from ENGIE Hazelwood participated in a panel session with the Commissioner, who each provided an overview of their mines’ rehabilitation plans and answered questions from the floor. The session was facilitated by our Technical Advisor Rhonda Hastie. Attendees were also given the opportunity to submit written questions via slido.com. Responses to the questions received during the panel session will be available here soon.
Representatives from the LVRRS and ENGIE shared information and answered questions at their respective display stands, with art created as part of the Coal Hole community arts project also on show by Project Arts Director PollyannaR.
