Glossary of Terms


Landform
A natural shape on the earth’s surface such as a mountain or a valley.
Land use
A collective term that encompasses the ownership, the activity and the biophysical surface cover of the land. Land use classifications generally describe all aspects of activity continuously across a landscape, such as; agricultural uses, environmental uses and residential/industrial uses.
Subsidence
The process by which land or building sink to a lower level.
Depressurisation
To (cause a closed space) become lower in pressure.
Rehabilitation Bond
A rehabilitation bond is a bond determined by the Minister for Resources as set out in Section 80 of the Mineral Resources (Sustainable Development) Act 1990, the purpose of which is to cover the cost of rehabilitation should any mine or extractive industry operator default on its obligations to rehabilitate the land.
Safe
lowering risk to public health and safety, and the environment, both within and outside the mine.
Stable
ground instability and adverse ground movements in and around the mines will be minimised as far as practicable.
Sustainable
long-term beneficial use of the land form will be determined.
Strategy
goals regarding the rehabilitation of the mines will be made clear to the mine owners, government and wider community.
Work plan / work plan variation
A plan detailing the nature of operations and management of risk as lodged under section 40 or section 77G of the Mineral Resources (Sustainable Development) Act 1990 or varied as a work plan variation under section 41AAB or 77HB of the Act.
Aquifers
A later of rock, sand, or earth that contains water or allows water to pass through it.
Heritage
Features belonging to the culture of a particular society, such as traditions, languages, or buildings, that were created in the past and still have historical importance.

The process of returning something to a good condition.
Closure
An act or process of closing something, especially an institution, thoroughfare, or frontier, or of being closed.^
